Maryland market structure

Since July 2000, Maryland customers have had the option to choose their own electric generation supplier. Customers who do not choose a competitive supplier automatically default to Maryland utilities, as designated by the Maryland Public Service Commission.

Each utility offers Standard Offer Service (SOS) rates for electric generation supply, which are market-based rates established annually through a wholesale bidding process. Beginning in 2007, SOS rates change quarterly for medium commercial and industrial accounts.
