SmartWind by FirstEnergy Solutions Corp. (FES) is an electricity product generated from renewable energy resources. SmartWind is produced in Pennsylvania by wind farms contracted to FES.
Your purchase of SmartWind enables you to support wind technology for creating electricity. Wind, as a renewable resource, is continuously replenished by nature and reduces environmental impacts compared to traditional sources of generation.

Wind power projects
The following are wind farms contracted to FES. There are currently 96 wind turbines in Central Pennsylvania generating power for FirstEnergy Solutions, with another 46 coming online in late 2008. When all are active, FES will have 184.5 megawatts (MW) of wind capacity.
- Meyersdale - 30 MW - Active since 2003
- Casselman - 34.5 MW - Active since 2007
- Allegheny Ridge I - 80 MW - Active since 2007
- Allegheny Ridge II - 70 MW - Expected online November 2008
All wind is not equal
Many Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) are from wind generation based in Nebraska, Oklahoma and North Dakota. Although this supports renewable technology, the electricity and clean air benefits stay in those areas. SmartWind directly benefits the Mid-Atlantic region.
