Do I have to choose a new electric supplier?
No. If you choose not to select a new electric generation supplier, your local electric utility company will continue to provide you with electric generation supply at rates regulated by your state utility commission. Often, the electric utility is called the provider of last resort.

Could I get "slammed" by an alternative electric supplier?
It is unlikely. Slamming is illegal in most states under energy competition laws. Most states have sufficient consumer protection built into the switching process. If you believe you are being served by a supplier other than the one you chose, contact your local electric utility immediately.

Who will deliver my power, read my meter and respond to emergencies, such as power outages?
Under energy restructuring, your local electric company will be responsible for the distribution of power to your home or business. Since your local electric utility still owns the wires and poles that deliver power to you, it will continue to read your meter and restore power after an outage.

What if I am already under contract with another electric generation supplier?
While your current electric generation supplier is the best source of information, many electric generation suppliers will charge a penalty for breaking your contract. Be sure to understand what your contractual arrangement is with your current supplier before switching to another supplier.

How will I know if an alternative generation supplier is reputable?
In an effort to protect customers, every state requires electric generation suppliers to be licensed to sell energy. Suppliers must meet stringent requirements, including federal and regional reliability standards. FirstEnergy Solutions Corp. is licensed to and currently sells electric generation supply in our home state of Ohio, plus Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, and Maryland.
