Decision checklist

Seven things your electric generation supplier should offer
  1. Reliability: The supplier should be registered with, or approved by, the state public utility commission.
  2. Competitive pricing: Remember that the lowest bid may not be the best choice.  FirstEnergy Solutions Corp. has no hidden costs and gives you an "all-in" price.
  3. Simple and innovative products: The supplier should be able to demonstrate how its products create value for you. Request and receive the terms and conditions.
  4. Timely and accurate billing: Ask to see samples of a bill and learn how the potential supplier resolves billing disputes. You should also receive your bill at the same time every month, either directly from the supplier or from your current utility (if dual-billing is available).
  5. Industry experience: The provider should have an extensive history of serving customers and be able to provide you with references.
  6. A fair and balanced contract: The contract should state an appropriate term length. It should also handle exceptions justifiably and follow a standard form.
  7. Efficient and effective customer service: The supplier should clearly explain to you how service requests will be handled, and who you should contact if you experience difficulties. Above all, the supplier should be responsive and knowledgeable.
