Washing Machines
Washing machines can use a significant amount of water and energy. Investing in an energy-efficient, ENERGY STAR® model can help save money by reducing the amount of resources used each wash cycle. Compared to standard models, ENERGY STAR® washers have the following benefits:

  • Use less energy
  • Use fewer gallons of water per wash cycle
  • Eliminate more water from clothes in the spin cycle, decreasing drying time

Washers sold in stores are required to have the EnergyGuide label. For a comparison of current washing machine models, click here.

Dryers
Below are some suggestions that may help increase dryer efficiency:

  • Divide wet clothes into piles based on fabric weight. Dry heavy fabrics separate from lighter ones to ensure that clothes dry quickly and evenly.
  • Dry loads consecutively so the dryer does not have to completely reheat for each load.
  • Clean your lint filter regularly. A clean filter promotes good air flow and shortens drying time.
  • If purchasing a new dryer, consider one with moisture or temperature controls. These dryers sense when clothes are dry and turn off automatically.
  • Reduce drying time with a washer that eliminates more water from clothes in the spin cycle.
